Course Overview
Equity and The Archive in Planning and Design is a colloquium course that provides an overview of scholarly work and methodological approaches to the archive, while also highlighting the role of the archive in centering ignored or marginalized histories. The course will introduce archival theories and methods in landscape architecture and environmental planning, expose students to planners, designers, and other academics actively using the archive for their work, and discuss how an archival practice can support social justice scholarship. Lectures will be cross disciplinary including geographers, designers, planners, historians, social scientists, artists, and activists. The course will discuss topics such as how can marginalized histories and cultural landscapes be centered in planning and design? How can our work as designers create an equitable and inclusive future by applying a critical lens to our past?
Learning Objectives:
Introduce foundational concepts of archival research.
Discuss the role of planning and design in narrating history and cultural norms.
Demonstrate the significance of the humanities and visual representation in planning and design.
Discuss how the archival practice can support social justice scholarship.
